At this annual retreat, the scientists of the Gene Center gather to discuss their latest work while enjoying the Bavarian countryside. The group leaders and invited guests give talks, students and postdocs present posters. This years invited speakers were Frank Buchholz (TU Dresden), Barbara Conradt (LMU), Markus Landthaler (MDC Berlin) and Kobi Benenson (ETH Zürich). Social activities include beer tastings and a hike in the beautiful mountain range surrounding the Retreat Center.

Since 2005, the Dr. Klaus Römer Foundation has been supporting research at the LMU Munich by awarding personal stipends to outstanding graduate students, postdocs and junior group leaders at the Departments of Biochemistry and Chemistry. This year, 16 Masters, 17 PhDs, 2 postdocs and 2 junior group leaders received the award, including Sebastian Geiger, Anselm Kusser, Andreas Mayr, Rieke Ringel, Alessandro Vannini and Daniel Wilson from the Gene Center.

The event incorporates Ulrike Gaul’s inaugural lecture at the LMU Munich and features honored guests including the Bavarian State Minister for Science, Research and the Arts, Dr. Wolfgang Heubisch, the President of the LMU, Prof. Dr. Bernd Huber, and the President of the Alexander von Humboldt-Foundation, Prof. Dr. Helmut Schwarz.

Former and current researchers and friends meet to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Gene Center. Among the honored guests are Dr. Wolfgang Heubisch, the Bavarian State Minister for Science, Research and the Arts, Prof. Dr. Bernd Huber, the President of the LMU, and Prof. Dr. Ernst-Ludwig Winnacker, the founder of the Gene Center. The festivities begin with a formal celebration and the unveiling of a new art work in honor of Prof. Winnacker in the Center’s lobby. The afternoon is filled with scientific talks by former and current group leaders of the Center, as well as guided tours through the laboratories and facilities. The celebration concludes with a panel discussion on the institutional and cultural requirements for innovative research and a party at the Center for Advanced Studies on the University’s downtown campus.
